We raise people who fear God and become the light and salt of the world.
Hello,
Jeonju Shinheung High School started modern education in 1900 with a single student at the home of a missionary from the Southern Presbyterian of the United States. The site of this Shinheung School is the place where the outstanding talents of Honam were selected and educated for 197 years and additionally the place where Si-geol Kim, the governor of Jeolla Province founded Heehyeondang, a national school run directly by Jeolla Gamyeong in 1700. More than anything else, it is one of the oldest schools in Korea.
Jeonju Shinheung High School led the March 13th Jeonju Independence Movement in 1919 and played an important role in the anti-Japanese independence movement in Jeonju during the Japanese colonial period, including the Gwangju Student Movement. Rejecting the policy of national annihilation and shrine worship, Jeonju Shinheung High School proudly closed the school door on its own, and reopened the school after liberation. Also, when the Korean War broke out, a large number of students did not spare their lives and participated in the war as student soldiers, fighting the communist forces and giving their lives for the freedom of this land. In May 1980, the 5.27 New Democratization Movement was launched in protest against the new military government's atrocities committed in Gwangju and resisted the unjust dictatorship.
Based on the founding philosophy of “cultivating people who fear God and become the light and salt of the world,” education that explores the truth, practices love, and realizes justice is the school’s operating philosophy and core values. The faculty and students who make up the school trust each other and are committed to learning and teaching. Faculty and staff set the lives of students right, parents support them, and more than 50,000 alumni serve as strong supporters and mentors to support, encourage, and guide current students.
Jeonju Shinheung High School, with its long history and shining tradition, has been dreaming of a transition to ‘a giving school’, which means returning the love owed to American missionaries 123 years ago to people in need around the world. Based on the nourishment we have accumulated over the years, we would like to take a step forward in sharing the love we have received with our global neighbors in order to not only grow on our own, but also grow together. To this end, our students will grow further with an educational program that values the global environment and world peace based on the UNESCO spirit of global citizenship education.
To nurture talents who can actively cope with the future 4th industrial era, our faculty and staff will love students, cooperate with them sincerely, and work together with them all, following the wonderful tradition of our seniors who wanted to light up the darkness and open up a new world. Together, we will vigorously unfold the future of Shinheung. Thank you
