음성인식 기술을 활용한 통역 앱이 봇물 터지듯 쏟아지고 있다. 일선 경찰서에서 간단한 통역이 필요할 때 통역전문가를 부르지 않고 이런 통역 앱을 활용하거나, 평창 동계올림픽과 같은 대형 스포츠 이벤트에서도 정식 파트너로 통·번역 앱을 채택하면서 그동안 인간이 담당했던 통역 업무를 통역 앱이 빠르게 대체하는 모습이다.

통역 앱 시장의 선두 주자는 네이버가 지난해 8월 내놓은 파파고다. 앱을 실행하고 한국어로 말하면 영어, 일본어, 중국어로 통역을 해주는 앱이다. 번역하고 싶은 문장을 입력하면 이 언어들로 즉각 번역해주기도 한다.
