The vanish star Pluto 

Pluto has now been ejected from the 9 planets of the solar system that I memorized in school to 8 planets. The ninth planet, Pluto, is no longer part of the solar system and is classified as a dwarf planet.  

As similar celestial bodies orbiting Pluto in similar elliptical orbits were discovered, controversy arose as to whether Pluto was suitable as a planet. The dwarf planet Eris, discovered in 2005, was found to have a mass about 27% greater than Pluto at the time. It turns out that Pluto is just one of several icy bodies in the outer solar system. So, the opinion was raised that only Pluto could not be classified as a planet, and there was discussion about whether to classify all of Charon, Pluto, Ceres, etc. as planets or whether to exclude them all. 

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union established a new definition of planet. From the existing standards, it was added that it must orbit around the sun, have sufficient mass to maintain a spherical shape through its own gravity, and eliminate other celestial bodies around its orbit. Pluto was difficultconsider as a dominant celestial body as there were many other celestial bodies around its orbit. In particular, many celestial bodies similar in size to Pluto have been discovered, and together with these celestial bodies, they form the Kuiper Belt. For this reason, Pluto lost its status as a planet, and Eris, Ceres, etc. were grouped together into a new category called dwarf planets and Pluto-type objects. 

학교에서 외운 태양계 행성 '수금지화목토천해명' 9개의 행성에서 이젠 8개의 행성으로 명왕성이 퇴출당했습니다. 9번째 행성 명왕성은 더이상 태양계가 아 닌 왜소행성으로 분류되었습니다. 

명왕성과 비슷한 타원 궤도를 도는 유사한 천체들이 발견되면서, 명왕성이 행성으로 적합한가에 관한 논란이 발생했습니다. 

2005년에 발견된 왜행성 에리스는 당시 명왕성보다 질량이 27% 정도 더 큰 것으로 파악되었습니다. 즉 명왕성이 태양계 외곽의 여러 얼음 천체들 중 하나에 불과하다는 것이 밝혀졌습니다.  

그래서 명왕성 하나만 행성으로 분류할 수는 없다는 의견이 나왔고, 카론, 명왕성, 세레스 등을 모두 행성으로 분류할지 아니면 모두 제외할지에 대한 논의가 이루어졌습니다. 

2006년 국제천문연맹은 행성의 정의를 새롭게 정립했습니다. 

기존에 있던 기준에서 태양을 중심으로 공전하고, 충분한 질량을 가져 자체 중력으로 구형을 유지하며, 공전 궤도 주변의 다른 천체들을 제거해야한다는 것을 추가하였습니다. 명왕성은 궤도 주변에 다른 천체들이 많아 지배적인 천체라고 보기 어려웠습니다. 특히 명왕성과 비슷한 크기의 천체들이 많이 발견되었고, 이러한 천체들과 함께 카이퍼 벨트를 형성하고 있습니다. 이러한 이유 때문에 명왕성은 행성의 지위를 잃고 에리스, 세레스 등을 함께 묶어 왜행성 및 명왕성형 천체라는 새로운 분류에 집어넣었습니다.
