주체성의 힘이란 생각보다 강력하다. 브라이언 스티븐슨의 할머니께선 넌 특별하단다를 원칙으로 말씀하셨다. 나 자신이 나를 특별하다 생각한다면 세상에 펼칠 나의 힘은 강해지지 않을까하고 내 모습을 다시금 돌아봤다. 브라이언 스티븐슨의 ted강연은 인종차별에 대한 나의 무심함을 일깨워주는 계기를 선물했다. 미국은 대한민국보다 민주주의 정착이 빨랐지만 민주주의 속 차별을 적나라하게 보여줬다. 미국 알라바마 주에서는 범죄경력이 있는 사람은 투표권이 박탈되어 흑인 남자 34%가 투표권이 없다. 형사처벌을 할 때는 유죄냐 무죄냐가 아닌 부유하냐 빈곤하냐가 기준이며 백인보다 흑인이 사형선고 확률이 22배나 높다는 것은 충격이었고 인종차별의 심각성을 피부로 느꼈다. 이어 브라이언 스티븐슨은 "어려운 과제들을 외면하면 긍정적이고 좋은 일에도 필연적으로 영향이 미치게 된다. 인권과 근본적인 인간의 근엄성을 존중하지 않는 한 우리는 문명인이라 할 수 없다"고 했다. 이 말이 정말 인상깊었고 나를 성찰하고 나부터 추진력을 가지고 인종차별, 불평등에 대해 맞서는 사람이 되고자 노력해야겠다고 다짐했다.
