Nearly half a million condoms will be distributed free during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
"We will be distributing 450,000 condoms to the 10,500 athletes who will be participating in the Olympics," Lucas Dantas, a spokesman for the Rio 2016 Committee, told AFP Thursday. "The distribution will begin when the Olympic village opens on July 24."
Of the total, 350,000 will be male condoms and 100,000 female condoms, he said.
It works out to about 42 condoms for each athlete.
At the 2012 London Olympics, 150,000 condoms were handed out.
"Brazil really encourages safe sex and athletes set an example to the general population," Dantas said. "They can play an important role in the fight against AIDS."
But with the World Health Organization saying the mosquito-borne Zika virus can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, it seems the condom distribution is a precaution against spreading the virus in the Olympic community.
Australia recently said it will distribute its own Zika-proof condoms to the national team.
