Human remains found in the wreck of the ferry Sewol have been confirmed to be those of a student who went missing in the 2014 accident.

According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Friday, forensic scientists have concluded that the teeth found three days ago in the ship belong to Huh Da-yoon, who was a student at Danwon High School in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province.

She is the second person to be identified after Ko Chang-seok, a teacher from the same school, since operations began last month to search for the nine missing people.

The conclusion came much earlier than expected, after forensic scientists analyzed the teeth through radiographic examination.

Other remains found in the ferry are going through examination as well as a DNA test for identification.

On Thursday, searchers found a bag, a mobile phone and a wallet of Cho Eun-hwa, one of the missing people, in debris recovered from a room on the ferry’s fourth deck near the stern. She reportedly shared with a room with Huh.

Meanwhile, divers have been searching carefully for any remains on the seafloor around the site where it sank. Underwater fences have been set up surrounding the area.

The 6,825-ton ferry sank off the island of Jindo on April 16, 2014, killing 304 people, most of them students from the school.

The ship was raised from the depths in March and towed to port in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province.

The disaster and its aftermath gripped the nation and overshadowed former President Park Geun-hye, who stayed at her residence for the crucial first seven hours of the sinking. What she was doing at that time is still unknown.

The sinking was blamed on a combination of the inexperienced crew members, cargo overloading, an illegal redesign and lax government regulations.
