This is not the first time France has tried to exclude Muslim culture. In 2004, the French law on secularity and conspicuous religious symbols in schools went into effect, banning people from wearing clothes with religious symbols in schools. In 2011, France became the first country to ban burqas. And just a few weeks ago, France’s right-wing leaders, including a member of former President Nicholas Sarkozy’s Les Republicains Party, Valerie Boyer, dismissed a plan by a community group in Marseille to reserve a water park for one day for Muslim women wearing burkinis. “Accepting this so-called fashion means we accept communalism in our country,” Boyer tweeted, according to the BBC, Thursday. |
