If you want to become an English teacher in Korea, it is essential to learn a lot of teaching principles and English linguistics knowledge.

Studying these things, you will learn some theories which are so attractive that you want to apply them to practice in classes immediately. Whoever is in the College of Education, he or she does try hard to become a teacher, a real teacher.

Yes, that's what we do to become a teacher. However, theories we've learned and linguistics knowledge we've gotten are needless things in the field. All we need is the ability to solve Korea Scholastic Ability Test questions. How well you solve KSAT questions and know a wide range of vocabulary determines whether you are a good teacher or not.

Whatever it is, we do have a lot of interest in English education and spend much of our time studying English. So here's the question: Are we good at English? Students nowadays have learned some skills to help solve KSAT questions better, and some of them get the top grade in English tests. Yes, this top grade is an objective measure. Then, does he or she have outstanding English proficiency?

In Korea, an average student gets almost 12 years of English education. Additionally, if the private tutoring is taken into consideration, it may safely say that it is more than 12 years. If I have to answer the question mentioned above, however, I would rather say "no" despite the fact that we've spent too much energy on learning English.

I am willing to seek the cause of this gap between the ideal and the real. Koreans live in an EFL setting. Suppose you are born and raised in Korea, there is de facto little chance or opportunity to practice English. Even though we have a lot of foreigners nowadays, it is almost impossible for students to meet them and have a conversation.

Moreover, as schools lost support of the native-speaking instructor system recently, hardly do we meet foreigners in schools. In this situation, a lecture emphasizing reading ability becomes the most effective lesson in KSAT. Consequently, that ability becomes the only criterion for evaluating a teacher's ability and, of course, students prefer to take this sort of lesson.

If this theory is applied appropriately and realized well, I'm pretty sure that it should contribute greatly to our English communicative skills.

In equally improving the four skills namely, reading, listening, speaking and writing, preliminary teachers do struggle to acquire those kinds of principles, but before long, their passion unfortunately dies on the vine in the actual class.

With almost 40 students per class, it is impossible to do communicative language teaching in Korea. To make the matter worse, students only do care about reading comprehension, which is helpful to get a better score in KSAT.

In this case, teachers can't help but teach reading passages and force students to memorize tough vocabularies. Consequentially, teachers also lose the opportunity to enhance their communicative skills and that makes them inarticulate.

One good step forward, though, is NEAT (National English Ability Test). As it assesses speaking and writing abilities as well as reading and listening, teachers, including preliminary teachers like me, wouldn't be neglecting how to improve ourselves, so that we can teach four skills effortlessly.

Some teachers I know say what they learned in college is not that important in school. Nobody cares about improving communicative skills. Whenever I hear it, I always have feelings of doubt. But I believe someday it will change. And that change will start with me.

And I felt Students have to study English for 12 years In Korea, and ,we've spent too much energy on learning English.
I think sometimes English study for 12years fortune but , has become an essential.
After I read this article I feel empathy. Later on, I become a good teacher I want to teach students.
