남북으로 길게 뻗은 아메리카 대륙은 파나마 운하를 경계로 남？북아메리카로 나누기도 하고, 문화적으로 앵글로아메리카, 라틴아메리카로 구분하기도 한다. 마야, 아스테카, 잉카 문명 등 찬란한 문명을 이룩하기도 했으나, 16세기 유럽인의 진출로 파괴되고 기독교 중심의 새로운 유럽 문화가 이식되었다. 미국과 캐나다로 이루어진 앵글로아메리카는 세계 경제의 중심지로서 다인종 국가를 이루고 있으며, 라틴아메리카는 아메리카 원주민과 유럽계 백인, 아프리카계 흑인과 혼혈 등 다양한 민족이 어우러져 살고 있다.

   The long stretch of the Americas is divided geographically by the Panama Canal into North and South America. Culturally, it is divided into Anglo-America and Latin America. Although it achieved brilliant heights of civilization with the Mayan, Aztec, and Inca civilizations, it was destroyed by the colonization of the Europeans in the 16th century. A new European culture centered on Christianity was enforced. The U.S. and Canada, primarily Anglo-American, are the centers of the global economy and multiculturalism. Latin America is also home to a wide variety of ethnic groups and cultures.
