Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

제1연에서 서정적 자아인 나는 어느 가을날 숲 속에서 두 갈래의 길을 만나 망설이다가,

제2연에서는 그 중 사람이 적게 다니는 길을 택하고,

제3연에서는 선택한 길을 가면서 다른 길은 훗날을 위하여 남겨 두고,

제4연에서는 자신이 선택한 길 때문에 모든 것이 달라졌다고 회상하는 내용으로 시상을 전개했다.

특히 마지막 제4연에는 작가의 사상이 드러나 있다.
