Apple

I woke and remembered
nothing of what was dreaming.

The day grew light, then dark again.
In all its rich hours, what happened?

A few weeds pulled, a few cold flowers
carried inside for the vase.
A little reading. A little tidying and sweeping.

I had vowed to do nothing I did not wish
to do that day, and kept my promise.

Once, a certain hope came close
and then departed. Passed by me in its familiar
shawl, scented with iodine woodsmoke.

I did not speak to it, nor it to me.
Yet still the habit of warmth traveled
between us, like an apple shared by old friends.

One takes a bite, then the other.
They do this until it is gone.

사과

눈을 뜨니 내가 꾸고 있던
꿈이 전혀 생각나지 않았다.

날이 밝고, 다시 어두워졌다.
그 풍성한 시간 동안 무슨 일이 일어났던가?

잡초를 좀 뽑고, 차가운 꽃 몇 송이
꺽어 들어와 화병에 꽂았다.
약간의 독서, 약간의 청소와 비질.

이 날은 하기 싫은 일은 하지 않기로
맹세했었고, 그렇게 했다.

한번인가, 희망 같은 게 다가왔다.
그리곤 이내 떠나버렸다. 낯익은 숄 걸치고
요드 같은 목연향 풍기며 내 곁을 지나갔다.

난 말을 건네지 않았고 그쪽도 마찬가지.
하지만 우리 사이엔 따뜻한 관례가
오갔다, 옛 친구들이 나눠 먹던 사과처럼.

이쪽에서 한 입 깨물면, 다음엔 그쪽에서 깨문다.
그렇게 해서 다 없어질 때까지
