Today’s Racism Problem

  Racism means the unfair treatment of people who belong to a different race, and having a good feeling on one particular race is also included in racism. Nowadays, we can find many racial discrimination cases in our society with the increase of people’s immigrant and exchange. Extreme level of racism has already disappeared long time ago. However, racial discrimination often arises recently since people don’t understand each other due to cultural differences and they discriminate a particular race unconsciously.

  So what is the root cause of racism? There are various reasons of racism but the most common reason is the sense of superiority. When people think that their own race is superior to others on many factors, they discriminate other races based on that thinking. For typical example, there was a case that a white man assaulted a Korean student and made a discriminatory statement against him just because he is an Asian. Racism is no exception to a global soccer player as well. A Korean soccer player, who plays a big part in soccer with his great skills, said that he was discriminated against for being an Asian. As you can see, racism is still pervasive in our society, and it hurts the victim’s heart.

  Not only violent act is included in racial discrimination. Our unconscious bias on particular race can be a racial discrimination as well. We don’t like to admit it but we have racial prejudices such as “Southeast Asians are poor” implicitly in our minds. Not openly but quietly ignoring and discriminating some races is a serious problem because it hurts their minds and it is difficult to correct the prejudice once it is made. These prejudices sometimes stop a particular race from their advance in society and make them be not treated as a human being. That’s why it is necessary to correct those prejudices and solve the racial problem.

  Perception change is the most important thing to solve the racial problems. As the saying goes, "There can be many reasons why a person hates a person, but skin color cannot be included in it," we should no longer judge a person by only skin color. Race is just a difference, so we should admit it and respect each other. As the world is globalized and opportunity to meet people from various cultures increases, we should learn about other cultures and should’t be biased on them.
